Parenting tips: How to develop moral values in your children?

Updated on July 15, 2013

Raising good, moral kids!

Moral values need to be taught early. Remember that saying, ‘Charity begins at home’? Similarly, kids need to learn the basic moral values at home too. The most important principle that any parent should remember is that kids do whatever they see. So in order to instill morals in them, it is necessary that you try to be a moral person around them.

Family values and morals passed from one generation to another are like the cherished family heirlooms. What parents mostly want for their kids is a value-based life. It could be character, integrity, virtue, morality, ethics or just everything combined. But raising good kids is not an overnight job, nor is it an easy one. It requires a lot of patience, unconditional love and sometimes using their right to veto power.

Tips to make learning fun.

Children love to play and have fun. When values are taught in a fun way, they are readily accepted by the kids. Here are the five age-old tips that have helped parents to instill moral values in their children.

1) Teach by example

Parents are the first teachers that any child can have. To teach them moral values, parents should make their lives, living examples of good moral behavior.

2) Share family values

Share your most cherished family values with your kids. But ensure that you practice what you preach.

3) Discipline means to teach, not punish

Teaching values and discipline to your kids becomes pointless when you threaten to take away their favorite tor or punish them in some other way. Tell them what behavior you expect and when they do something wrong don’t use punishment as a means of teaching values.

4) Incorporate the golden rule.

What’s the golden rule you ask? It’s ‘Treat others as you want to be treated.’ Teach this to your children and make it your family’s moral principle.

5) Make teaching fun with stories that have morals.

Know why kids love Aesop’s fables? These fables are entertaining short stories that illustrate a particular moral and teach lessons. The characters are animals that act and talk just like people which is very appealing to kids. So next time you’re trying to make your kid understand what honesty means, just show them the animated Aesop Fables from HooplaKidz.

Here are some of the most popular Aesop’s fable videos with some great moral values.

1) Goose that laid the golden egg

2) The Peacock’s compliant

3) The Dog and his reflection

4) The Thieves and the Rooster

5) Dancing Monkeys

6) The Lion and the Elephant
